NDIS Assistive Technology Guide: How to Access and Use Your Funding

At Assistive Tech Hub, we’re a Registered NDIS Provider helping participants across Australia confidently access assistive technology (AT) that improves independence, safety, and everyday life. Whether you’re new to the NDIS or updating your plan, our expert team is here to support your journey from eligibility to equipment delivery.

What Is Assistive Technology?

The NDIS defines assistive technology as any equipment, technology, or device that helps you:

  • Do things you can’t do because of your disability
  • Perform tasks more safely or independently
  • Reduce the need for support over time

Examples include:

  • Low-cost items: walking sticks, non-slip mats, eating aids
  • Mid-cost items: shower commodes, basic power wheelchairs
  • High-cost items: complex communication devices, custom-built wheelchairs

Not all household items are considered AT—only those that are required due to disability-specific needs.

What Can Be Funded Under the NDIS?

To be included in your NDIS Plan, assistive technology must:

  • Relate directly to your disability
  • Be value for money compared to similar alternatives
  • Help you meet your personal goals and needs
  • Not be funded by another system (e.g., hospitals, schools, or public transport)

Each item is evaluated based on:

  • Its cost (low, mid, or high)
  • Its risk level (low or higher)
  • How it contributes to your independence and safety

How to Access Assistive Technology Through Your NDIS Plan

✅ Step 1: Check Your Eligibility

To qualify, you must:

  • Be under 65 years of age
  • Be an Australian citizen or permanent resident
  • Have a permanent and significant disability

✅ Step 2: Apply for the NDIS

You can request an Access Request Form by:

✅ Step 3: Prepare for Your Planning Meeting

Discuss your goals and how assistive technology can help you achieve them. Provide:

  • Written advice or assessment from a qualified assistive technology advisor
  • Evidence of the item’s value and relevance to your disability
  • Reports or lived experience that support the request
  • Quotes (for high-cost AT)

✅ Step 4: Use Your Approved Plan Confidently

After your plan is approved:

  • Work with a Registered Provider like Assistive Tech Hub
  • Purchase, rent, or trial the assistive technology
  • Keep all quotes, invoices, and written advice for your records

What You Must Do Before Buying Assistive Technology

Requirements differ depending on the cost and risk level:

Cost Category Per Item Value Requirements
Low Cost
Under $1,500
Self-managed; advice recommended
Mid Cost
$1,500–$15,000
Written advice required
High Cost
Over $15,000
Formal assessment + quote required

Risk level matters: Higher-risk items (e.g. bed rails, powered devices, pressure care) require advice from an AT advisor or assessor before purchasing.

What Else Can Be Funded?

The NDIS may also fund:

  • Advice & assessments (capacity building support)
  • Setup & delivery costs
  • Trials and rentals of new or unfamiliar AT
  • Maintenance and repairs
  • Replacement of old, damaged, or unsuitable AT
